Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
