India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Following Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" level.
Alarming Air Quality Levels
Various sections of the city showed an AQI exceeding 500, which equals ten times the recommended threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding safe standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
Since 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly smog that covers the city as the cold season sets in.
Nevertheless in recent months, the recently formed city administration appealed to the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Court Decision and Reality
Much to the frustration of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities approved the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during specific periods throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Regional Effects
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from neighboring India following the events.

In these regions, rural residents illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing toxic haze that remains stagnant over the city as colder air sets in.
Medical and Financial Consequences
Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the capital region is significant, according to multiple investigations.
The contaminated air results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can potentially cause cancer.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely mortalities each year in Delhi.
